Description

Expand the capacity of your Lutron LED dimmer

Most residential Lutron phase dimmers – Diva®, Maestro® and similar models – are rated for roughly 150 W of dimmable LED load. That covers a handful of fixtures, but it runs out quickly on LED strip projects where several 24 V power supplies need to dim together. The Lutron PHPM-PA-120-WH power module removes that ceiling. The wall dimmer stays in place as the control point, and the power module carries the actual lighting load – up to 16 A at 120 V.

How it works

  1. The existing Lutron wall dimmer generates the dimming signal.
  2. The PHPM-PA-120-WH reads that signal on its control input.
  3. The module switches and phase-dims the full 120 V lighting load.
  4. Every connected phase-dimmable LED power supply dims in sync from that one wall control.

The module is phase-adaptive: it detects the connected load and automatically selects leading-edge (forward-phase) or trailing-edge (reverse-phase) dimming, so there is no manual configuration. A Square Law dimming curve keeps the fade smooth to low levels, and Lutron's RTISS circuitry corrects for line voltage and frequency variation in real time so levels stay steady.

Example installation
A typical LED strip build uses 96W 24V dimmable power supplies.

Without a Power Module:

  • Standard Lutron wall dimmer
  • Approximately 150W LED load
  • Usually only one or two power supplies

With a PHPM-PA-120-WH:

  • Up to 16 Amps at 120V
  • Approximately 1,920 Watts total connected load*
  • Around 20 × 96W dimmable LED drivers
  • Approximately 80 Amps of available 24V DC output

This makes the PHPM ideal for:

  • Long LED strip installations
  • Cove lighting
  • Commercial lighting
  • Hospitality projects
  • Large residential projects
  • Retail lighting
  • Architectural lighting

Actual loading depends on the connected power supply specifications and Lutron's installation guidelines. Up to three power modules can be controlled from a single compatible dimmer for larger zones.

Typical applications: long LED strip runs, cove and linear lighting, architectural and retail lighting, hospitality, commercial fit-outs and large residential projects.

Why not just fit a bigger wall dimmer?
There isn't one. In-wall dimmers are not built to carry large LED loads, and pushing them past their rating causes flicker, buzz or premature failure. The PHPM-PA-120-WH is part of Lutron's commercial range and was designed for exactly this job – keeping the familiar wall control while a rated module handles the current.

Compatible Applications:

The PHPM-PA-120-WH is ideal for controlling multiple:

  • Phase-dimmable 24V LED drivers
  • Phase-dimmable constant voltage power supplies
  • Architectural LED strip lighting
  • Linear lighting systems
  • Hospitality lighting
  • High-end residential lighting

Frequently asked questions

Can I run multiple LED power supplies from one dimmer?
Yes. That is the main reason to use the PHPM – several phase-dimmable LED drivers dim together from a single Lutron wall dimmer.

Does it work with 24 V LED strip lighting?
Yes, and it is the most common use. Each driver converts the dimmed 120 V AC to 24 V DC while holding smooth dimming.

How many 96 W drivers can I connect?
Around 20, subject to the drivers' inrush and total current draw within the 16 A rating.

Can I buy it at Home Depot?
Usually not – see Availability above.

Need help specifying it?
Not every LED driver dims cleanly on every system. If you're unsure whether your drivers or strips will work with the PHPM-PA-120-WH, contact our technical team and we'll confirm the right dimmer, power module, driver and strip combination for your project.
