What’s the best LED driver for your project?

Whether a 12-volt LED dimmable transformer or a 24-volt LED transformer, there are a few things to consider when choosing the best LED driver on the market for your lighting solutions.

First, what type of LED are you using? Each strip uses a different wattage or voltage. It's important to match the voltage of your LED strip to the voltage of the LED driver and also make sure the driver can handle the entire strip load. This will help ensure that your LED strip operates at peak efficiency.

Next, verify if the input of your strip is 12V, 24V, or 48V DC. Check the product specs or markings on the strip. Incorrect voltage input can cause malfunctions and other safety hazards. Do not connect a 12V LED strip to a 24V dimmable LED driver.

Last, you need to decide what type of LED driver you need. We have two main types of LED drivers: Magnitude drivers (24V Dimmable Led Driver M200L24DC - Dimmable Class 2 Electronic LED Driver E96R24DC)  and our Indoor / Outdoor Meanwell LED drivers.

If you do not plan to dim the lights from a wall switch and want to dim them with one of our dimmers, you will need a compatible non-dimmable Meanwell LED driver. Why? The driver will not be used to dim the lights. The dimmer that is installed after the driver will do all the work.

If you plan on using a wall switch to dim your LED lights, then you will need a Magnitude LED driver. The wall switch dimmer will control the magnetic dimmable LED driver.

The ERP driver is the smallest, high-quality 100W LED driver on the market and can be used as a LED strip light driver inside LED channels and fixtures.

Meanwell LED driver

These excellent LED drivers are ideal indoor or outdoor LED drivers. The Meanwell LED driver part numbers can be misleading, so always take note of the wattage stipulated on the spec sheet. For example: the HLG-240h-12V only has an output of 192 watts at 12V as compared to the HLG-240h-24, which is a 240 watt 24V driver.

FAQ's

What is an LED Driver used for?

An LED driver is a device that regulates and supplies the current used to "drive" an LED strip light. Like a conventional transformer, it converts the mains AC voltage (120 VAC) to lower voltages (12V, 24V, 48V).

Is the Magnitude driver suitable for commercial installations?

Our 12V and 24V LED dimmable drivers are perfect for multiple applications, whether residential or commercial lighting fixtures. 

Can a driver handle more than one run of LED lights?

Yes, whether you get a 12-volt dimmable transformer or a 24-volt one, make sure the driver you are using can handle the total wattage of all the LED strip runs.

How do I know what size power supply I need?

Take the length of your LED strip in meters and multiply it by the watts consumed per meter, then multiply by 1.2.

Let’s look at an example: If you want to install 5 meters of LED lights and you know that the strip consumes 8.4W/m, multiply 5 meters by 8.4W/m = 42W. Then multiply the total by 1.2 = 50W. This means that you will need a LED driver that is rated for at least 50W. Remember, this prevents your power supply from overheating and failing prematurely.

Are LED drivers interchangeable?

Whether your project requires a dimmable LED driver or a non-dimmable driver, you have to keep in mind that LED drivers are not standardized, so they are not interchangeable. They can vary in terms of output characteristics, electrical safety rating, input voltage, programmability, temperature rating, and dimming interface.

What is a 120V to 24V LED driver?

A 24V dimmable LED transformer allows you to convert the standard 120V to 24V DC so that you can power LED strips under low voltage.

Is my LED power supply IP65 outdoor-rated?

IP65 Rating means the product has the highest level of dust protection and is able to withstand low-pressure water jets from all directions.

Is the 24 volt dimmable transformer the same as a 24 Volt led driver?

Yes, generally, people use the two words driver and transformer interchangeably.

Can I use a 24 volt LED power supply on a 12V LED?

No. Using a 24 volt LED power supply with a 12V LED is not recommended and could potentially damage the LED. LEDs are designed to operate within a specific voltage range, and using a power supply with a higher voltage than the LED's rated voltage can lead to excessive current flow, overheating, and ultimately, the failure of the LED.
